Book Review: Stephen King - The Institute (published in 2019)

Stephen King - The Institute

I have read many reviews about this book that state that this is Stephen King's return to his "old style". It is reminiscent of his past books.

I find statement to be completely true. The language of the book also brought me back to the 80's, but not always in the best way since this book was intended to take place now. I'm pretty sure Yugoslavia is not on the map anymore...

Anyways that having been said, I enjoyed the story about Luke Ellis. A 12-year-old boy with a special skill. A paranormal skill. He's also incredibly smart, which luckily doesn't result in lazy writing. It's dangerous when the main character is almost omniscient due to his high intelligence, but King know how to use it well.

Luke's parents are killed one night and he's put in the back of a van, but he wakes up in his room. Only this time his room in located in The Instute. A place with more children with special skills.

More importantly than just liking the writing, I also liked the ending (which is not always the case with King - he's famously bad at writing endings -- he says so himself). The writing and language could use some improvements, but it didn't really ruin the story for me that much. I highly recommend this book.

P.s. the after word by the author actually brought tears to my eyes. The words he has written to remember his dear friend are incredibly touching and bring me back to King's older works. He's a terrific writer and I can't wait to read even more by him.
